Cameroon’s victory over Brazil was bitter-sweet. It made history as the first African nation to ever defeat Brazil in the World Cup.
But as it was celebrating its victory, it will be its last game in the 2022 World Cup. While Cameroon had to defeat Brazil, it also relied on Serbia to upset Switzerland, which didn’t happen.
In this epic matchup, the game was all tied up at 0 with just minutes remaining in regulation. Brazil had taken well over a dozen shots, keeping Cameroon’s goalie on his feet, with multiple blocks.
But on the other side of the goal, Brazil’s goalie couldn’t stop Mbekeli’s feed and Aboubarkar header to take the 1-0 lead. In instant jubilation, Aboubakar removed his shirt and received a yellow card. Unfortunately, that was his second yellow card, disqualifying him for the rest of the game (which was just a couple of minutes).
Cameroon needed a second goal and help from Serbia to make it to the Round of 16 round. But because Switzerland defeated Serbia, a second goal would have been fruitless.
So Cameroon will be joining Ghana and Tunisia among the disqualified African nations. The two African nations that have advanced to the Round of 16 is Senegal and Morocco.
Despite not advancing to the next round, Cameroon has made history in Qatar in its upset victory against Brazil.
